Career Pathways Assessments are divided into two parts: a general assessment and career pathway assessments. These two segments are designed to work together to measure the full set of college and career ready competencies expected of high school graduates in the 21st century. These competencies include core academic skills, employability skills, and the technical skills required to succeed in any position, as well as the additional competencies and skills required to succeed in the career pathway of the student’s choosing.
General Assessment – The general assessment measures knowledge, skills, and abilities common to all career pathways. Competencies addressed in national standards that encompass 21st century skills needed for success in postsecondary education and the workforce, for example, computer literacy, presentation skills, and research abilities.
Pathway Assessment – Career pathway assessments focus on the specific competencies addressed in each pathway as defined by nationally recognized career and technical education standards. For example a student interested in assembling automobiles might take the Manufacturing Production pathway assessment, while a student interested in working on a farm might consider the Comprehensive Agriculture pathway assessment.
Both the general assessment and pathway assessments include a computer-based test and a field-based performance evaluation called a Career Competency Qualification.*
Field-based assessments allows students to demonstrate specific skills by performing tasks in an actual work environment. Examples of the types of hands-on tasks students could perform in a field-based assessment include welding in front of an instructor or fabricating meat for retail sale in a meat processing plant.
